What Is a Water Treatment Plant?

A Water Treatment Plant (WTP) takes raw water from surface sources like rivers, lakes, and reservoirs or underground sources like borewells and open wells, and processes it through a series of physical, chemical, and biological treatment stages to produce water that is safe for drinking or industrial use.

In India, WTPs are the backbone of urban and rural water supply infrastructure. Every municipal corporation, panchayat water scheme, and Jal Jeevan Mission project requires a WTP of some scale. Industrial facilities also need process-water WTPs where raw water quality does not meet their equipment or product requirements.

Raw water intake from source, coarse screening to remove large debris.

Coagulation and Flocculation

Alum or PAC dosing in flash mixer, floc formation in clariflocculator.

Lamella clarifiers or tube settlers remove flocculated solids at high efficiency.

Filtration

Pressure sand filters and activated carbon filters for final turbidity removal.

Disinfection

Chlorination via gas chlorinator or electro-chlorination for pathogen kill.
